Renegade Racers was a PS One game released in 1999 by Interplay Entertainment. The game was developed on a shoestring budget by Promethean Designs out of Norwich, England, but was in great danger of not making its ship date. In total, I spent three weeks on assignment in Norwich to help lurch the game over the finish line, and lurch it did. Along with using Lightwave 3D and Photoshop to produce assets and texture upgrades for the game, I was asked to contribute a great deal on the side by Russell Ritchie, Managing Director of Promethean Designs.
The short, punchy list of "Russell-dos" includes:
- Proudly came up with the game's title, "Renegade Racers,"
- Named each new character in the PS One version of the game, including the great Buck Billionaire.
- Produced placeholder voice-overs for new PS One characters. Such vocals were needed, but didn't exist.
- Wrote and edited the marketing copy for the game's back cover:
So, here's your chance to choose your favorite Renegade Racers character and make waves like never before. Put the pedal to the metal and beat your opponents with raw speed and skill. Or, if that doesn't work, just blow 'em out of the water!
